The year 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act which established the Cooperative Extension Service.

This issue of Kentucky: By The Number Data Series was created to help in honoring that anniversary.

Other events happening around this time included the 1912 sinking of the Titanic and in 1914, World War I began in Europe. In 1918, the influenza epidemic killed many worldwide. The next year in 1919, Congress passed the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote and then sent it to the states to be ratified. That same year, the Grand Canyon National Park was established and the first pop-up toaster was invented.
