Grandparents as Caregivers

Grandparents as Caregivers

This issue of Kentucky: By the Numbers contains data on grandparents who live with their grandchildren and serve as their primary caregivers.

While not all grandparents live with their grandchildren, of those who do, 42% have primary responsibility for their care nationwide. For these grandparents, the highest proportion (39%) have been responsible for their grandchildren for 5 years or more, they are more likely to be younger (under 60 years old), and they are more likely to be women.

It is important to note that these data refer only to grandparents who live with their grandchildren.

For more information on grandparents living with grandchildren, see the Census publication at:http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/c2kbr-31.pdf
