2000-2004 Poverty Change Update
The first years of the new millennium saw an increasing poverty rate in the United States.
For Kentucky, not only is the poverty rate higher than that for the nation as a whole, but during these same years, it increased at a greater rate. This means that while Kentucky’s poverty rate remains higher than the nation, the gap between the state and the nation also increased during this time.
While the most recent national data show a decline in the poverty rate in the past year, county level data are not yet available.
This issue of “Kentucky: By the Numbers” compares poverty and poverty rates for the first five years of the decade.
